The Hong Kong Immigration department arrested two British nationals and a Canadian student on suspicion of an illegal internship operation. The suspects are alleged to have conned foreigner by employing them as interns for CRCC Asia—a supposed ‘leading provider of China Internships.’
According to local reports, a 29 year old victim called Michael had paid just over HKD 54,000 to the firm for internship opportunities in Hong Kong and China, expecting that he was going to be financial analyst. The company however turned around and said he could only work as an office assistance due to the processing of his training visa.
Michael claims he was later fired by the firm he was interning at for not having a visa and later found out from the Immigration Department that the CRCC did not apply for a visa for him. He states that many others have been victimised as a result of the scam.
Under Hong Kong law, foreigners are prohibited from taking up employment or opening a business without approval from the Immigration Department. The Department said that investigations were under way and CRCC Asia has stated that it will cooperate with the inquiry.
