A toxic workplace culture could be preventing up to two-thirds of prospective candidates from accepting a job offer according to new data from Culture Shift. The findings reveal that almost half of employees are put off applying for a job with a company that has negative online reviews, let alone accepting a job.
45% of employees reported that they would also be willing to leave a bad review online or warn people about applying for a job with a company with a toxic workplace. Toxic cultures are also not only impacting job seekers. In fact, two-thirds said that they would not buy a company’s products or services if they had a reputation for treating their employees poorly whilst almost three-quarters would not be willing to invest.
Toxic cultures are also affecting the workforce in a number of ways including problematic behaviour such as bullying or harassment, forcing employees to resign and breaking the trust between employees and employers.
There will never be a one-size approach for all organisations to adhere to when it comes to tackling toxic work environments. There are steps however that HR can put in place to reduce the risks of a toxic culture, eradicate problematic behaviour and ensure they are protecting their employees from harmful acts.
