HR is acutely aware of the uptake rate of social media by Gen-Y, and never has it been more important to utilise social media channels to help attract and engage quality talent in organisations. Social Media Week took place in Hong Kong from 8-12 February and was the first such event held in the SAR focusing entirely on emerging trends in social media and their impact on both business and the wider community.
The event was launched at The Pawn in Wan Chai, Hong Kong with a panel of experts discussing the rapid advance of social media in the region. Speakers included Blake Chandlee, VP of emerging markets, Facebook; Oliver Legrand, General Manager—Asia, Wall Street Journal Digital Network, Frank Rose, Contributing Editor, Wired Magazine and Rudi Leung, Director of Communication Planning, AGENDA Asia.
Discussions highlighted the fact that Asian markets are currently occupied by global social media players including: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, however, due to restrictions placed on many international players in key markets like China and Japan, they have also developed home-grown sites. These include RenRen.com and Sina Weibo (t.sina.com.cn) in China; and Mixi (mixi.jp) and Gree (gree.jp) in Japan.
HR take note—if you have not already—and you are hiring, it is time to get social.
