Ten culinary institutions from Hong Kong and Macau have joined forces to establish the Lee Kum Kee International Young Chef Chinese Culinary Challenge—Hong Kong and Macau Final. The competition will challenge 55 young chefs to compete for eight coveted finalist positions. These will go on to compete against other chefs from across Asia in the Lee Kum Kee International Young Chef Culinary Challenge 2014. The purpose of the challenge is to inspire a new generation of chefs and attract them to the field of culinary arts. While starting salaries for young Chinese chefs are at an all-time high—and comparable to new university graduates—up to 20% of culinary positions remain unfilled.
