Johan Ramel, CEO, Universum APAC, commented on this year’s rankings, “Hong Kong’s students choose safe or secure employers, those that are either well-established in the market or are strong multinational brands. Our research shows that the majority of students would like to work for large organisations since only a minority, 20%, chose micro or small employers (between 1 to 100 employees).”
Ramel added, “Job security is also important for students here, as 31% selected this as one of their three career goals. Similarly, the employer characteristics that they most associate to an ideal employer, reveals the student mindset in Hong Kong too. Market success and financial strength are two of the three most important characteristics an ideal employer can have in Hong Kong.”
Regarding employer reputation and image, Hong Kong’s students were asked to select the three most attractive qualities of an ‘ideal employer’ in general. Among a number of potential attributes, 48% of students surveyed selected good reputation, with others citing market success, 33%, and financial strength, 30% as key factors.
Ramel concluded, “I’m not surprised to see the Hong Kong SAR Government reach first place, as they offer a number of job opportunities that are suitable for new graduates looking for both career development and job security. HSBC is also an attractive employer for students here, since it’s known to be the world’s largest banking group and has its roots in Hong Kong.”
