A survey by the Chartered Management Institute has uncovered a growing backlash from male managers towards gender equality. The poll discovered that a third of male managers feel as though too much effort is being placed into supporting gender equality in the workplace compared to 13% of women.
On the other hand, 47% of female managers feel as though there is too little effort placed into gender equality whilst only a third believe that their business can successfully navigate future challenges without gender-balanced leadership.
37% of female managers also reported that they had missed out on promotional opportunities because they had children and were also more likely to say they had also missed out on a salary increase compared to only a fifth of male managers.
The results show that there is still a long way to go in order to achieve gender equity and that work needs to be done in order to shift male perceptions. Men have the potential to be great allies and must lend their voices in order to achieve a better gender balance. It is important that they are well educated in the benefits that gender equity brings to the business including better organisational performance.
