A study of global leadership with C-suite professionals by PA Consulting has confirmed observations that there are new concrete ways of leading that make a tangible difference to the health and happiness of an organisation and wider society. The survey of over 300 business leaders across the US, UK and Europe identified four leadership behaviours that will be critical to an organisation’s success over the coming five years.
Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of leaders recognise these four behaviours as being vital to leadership now and in the future. The four behaviours identified are:
- Nurture human optimism – helping people have a positive mindset and approach to new situations.
- Empower teams to innovate – inspiring people to understand customers’ desires and giving them space and permission to deliver value-creating responses.
- Build evolving organisations – creating environments where rapid change is the norm.
- Seek inspiration in surprising places – applying new perspectives and a broader lens to both existing technologies and evolving challenges.
Failing to take on these behavioural characteristics as a leader puts the organisation at a risk of being left behind on multiple fronts. In order to stay ahead, the report encourages leaders to think outside of their comfort zone, cultivate a culture of kindness and ensure that all actions are authentic. By doing so, business leaders can create the ideal conditions for change to take hold and flourish and ensure that their business is set up for long-term success.
