Employees under flexible or work from home arrangements are most productive in the morning than at other times throughout the day according to a survey conducted by Milieu Insight. Employees across the Asia region are productive for five to six hours per day with their most productive work happening between the hours of 8am and 1pm.
The survey polled 2500 full time employees in Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and The Philippines and found that the results were mutually exclusive across jurisdictions. Less than 20% of employees reported that they were most productive in the afternoon (between 1pm and 7pm.) Whilst almost three-quarters (72%) of respondents reported that they spent less than one hour on non-work-related activities throughout their day.
Browsing social media, snacking and speaking with friends were the top three non-work activities that were reported by employees whilst several noted that some of their non-work activities centred around household chores – made possible due to the work from home arrangements. When polled on break arrangements, answers were scattered between one long break and several smaller breaks throughout the day.
Ultimately, work from home arrangements have proven to be beneficial in terms of productivity, employee satisfaction and organisational bottom line. When managing remote teams, HR leaders should establish trust amongst employees that they will get their work done and allow them flexibility to complete the task by specified deadlines rather than working a set number of hours each day.
