Under a new company-wide policy, Airbnb employees can ‘live and work anywhere’ according to an email circulated by company CEO Brian Chesky. Under the new policy, employees will be able to move anywhere within the United States without a change in compensation. The policy also gives Airbnb employees the flexibility to travel and work around the world.
Chesky commented,
“We want to hire and retain the best people in the world (like you). If we limited our talent pool to a commuting radius around our offices, we would be at a significant disadvantage. The best people live everywhere, not concentrated in one area. By recruiting from a diverse set of communities, we will become a more diverse company.”
Such framing signifies a forward-looking approach but also as a unique way for the company to achieve a number of HR objectives.
To address the need for and value of in-person connections, employees will get together four times a year for team gatherings and social events. “Zoom is great for maintaining relationships, but it is not the best way to deepen them,” commented Chesky.
As the great return continues, businesses are discovering that they may still need to make some remote work concessions to attract and retain talent. In March, as many businesses began to notify employees of their return to office plans, organisations experienced the highest number of resignations ever recorded since the onset of the pandemic with many employees reporting that they would walk away if their company forced them back into the office.
