A digital nomad is a remote worker who travels and works simultaneously. Whether it is for a few months or years, recent research predictions from Instant Offices, there could be a billion people living and working this way by 2035.
Advances in technology, demand for remote working and changes in workplace culture enable this global workforce to plug in anywhere in the world, as long as they have a decent internet connection. It is estimated that there are already 35 million digital nomads worldwide and will rise to make up one in every three employees in just over a decade.
The research also ranked 80 locations worldwide to reveal the best places to be a digital nomad in 2022. Locations that rank highest provide the ideal combination of cost-efficient living with beautiful weather, superb connectivity and quality of life. Notably, major tourist destinations such as London and Paris rank comparatively low on the list.
Outranking every other city, Portuguese capital Lisbon came out on top. Lisbon is the perfect blend of inexpensive food, beautiful weather, scenery and infrastructure. With over 7,000 wi-fi hotspots and impressive broadband speeds, the city is ideal for those looking to enjoy the sun whilst they work.
Bangkok was named the best location for digital nomads in Asia and second-best overall. The Thai capital offers delectable local cuisine, vibrant markets and more than 15,000 wi-fi hotspots ensuring that workers will always be able to find somewhere to get online. Bangkok also had some of the most affordable accommodation out of all of the cities with the average price of an Airbnb coming in at under HKD $300 per night.
As the role of the office changes and flexibility increases globally, more workers will be able to travel and work virtually from anywhere enabling more people to adopt a digital nomad way of life.
