HandsOn Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) will co-host Serve-a-thon—the city’s first ever ‘Community Service Marathon’ and largest collective volunteerism based event.
In Hong Kong, 20,000 more people lived below the poverty line in 2015 than in the previous year—bringing the total number of impoverished people in Hong Kong to 1.34 million. Oxfam’s report last year also noted the wealth disparity gap reaching alarming levels, requiring the city’s poorest to work nearly 2.5 years to earn what the top 10% earn in a single month. There are a lot of people in Hong Kong that are in need for help in various aspects, although Hong Kong does not rank within the top 20 most charitable countries, according to The CAF World Giving Index 2016.
The aim of Serve-a-thon is to raise Hong Kong’s collective conscience on the importance of giving back through volunteering and provide a platform for those who would like to volunteer but are unsure of how and where to get started. More than 75 major cities currently host some form of ‘Community Service Marathon’ including Beijing, Shanghai, Manila, Sydney and New York—2017 is the first year we launch the annual Serve-a-thon initiative in Hong Kong.
