Merche Del Valle
Regional Head of Talent and Leadership, HR
Prudential Corporation Asia
Is your organisation being selective enough when developing leadership programmes and choosing its focus? This is the question L&D professionals need to be asking in order to stop wasting time, money and enthusiasm, according to Del Valle. She shared that she had found that leadership development in Prudential had somewhat plateaued and so she decided to take stock of the company's approach to the future and the recruitment and coaching of talents. She discovered through research of other firms that an unexpected road bump can be finding a definition of 'talent' that can be agreed upon by all. She commented, “We don't seem to agree on the definition of talent, or talent management, it differs between country, industry and even company. So, where are we putting that money?”
Del Valle shared an Economist study that found almost three in five ASAP CEOs consider the whole workforce to be talent. While she didn't disagree, she did recommend that firms recognise the difference between engaging, rewarding and managing the performance of all employees, supporting and appreciating the 'company backbone' talents and promoting and launching those talents with future leadership potential. She said, “Are they all suitable for the future organisation?”
