N-Stinctive
By Rosie Tomkins
Management books are usually aimed at high-level members of organisations and are comprised of many hundreds of text-heavy pages. Thankfully, Tomkins’ book is aimed at all levels. If you are a thought leader, high-achiever, early-adopter or someone intent on creating change, then there is something here for you.
Intentionally concise, at around 240 pages, N-Stinctive has been designed by Tomkins to be accessible, simple and memorable. She hopes that her three decades of experience speak to the reader in a unique way. Being female, which is by far the minority in terms of leadership book authors, she has a perspective that may challenge the status quo. Tomkins does away with dated sports metaphors and tribal mentality; her words bring a modern twist to leadership analogies, focusing more on nature where winning and losing are not our primary labels.
Packed with advice, quotes, anecdotes and diagrams, each kept simple and relevant, the majority of the book’s content can be digested in short sittings. I particularly liked the way a single story—about a boy called Jack—was woven throughout the book, connecting it together adding a nice layer of continuity.
Overall, I would recommend the book to anyone who holds, or intends to hold, a position of leadership in any area. There is something in here for everyone and is written in a way that is neither boring nor pretentious. It does, however, hold an air of legitimacy, thanks to the author’s valid credentials and experiences.
It will be available from the usual book retailers in February 2020.
