The Global Institute For Tomorrow (GIFT) is out to prove that there is more to life than money with the launch of The Other Hundred, an initiative which aims to capture in pictures the lives of those who will never make the Forbes 100 or Bloomberg Billionaires rich list, but continue to lead lives of dignity, fulfilment and achievement.
Launched in January, the non-profit project called for world-class photographers and photojournalists from across the globe to submit a single image and accompanying short essay to capture the reality of how the vast majority of the world’s population lives and highlight the fact that living on less than US$10 a day does not prevent 80% of it from living rich, full lives.
The global open call received 1,500 submissions containing over 10,000 photographs from more than 140 countries, which were judged by a panel of world-renowned photographers and photo-editors in May. The 100 winning entrants received a US$300 prize and the privilege of having their submissions published in The Other Hundred hardcover book released in October to coincide with World Poverty Day.
Commenting on the project, Chandran Nair, Founder and CEO of the Global Institute For Tomorrow said, “The goal of The Other Hundred is both to inform and to inspire. We want to challenge conventional wisdom and provoke debate—to realign perceptions about the world we live in.”
